The Story
In the spring of 2000, Fumiko Ishioka, the curator of a small Holocaust education centre for children in Tokyo, received a shipment from the Auschwitz museum that included an empty suitcase marked “Hana Brady, May 16, 1931, Orphan”. Fumiko and the children at the centre decided to find out what became of Hana. The heartbreaking story they uncovered of a brave young girl killed in the Holocaust and survived only by her brother, George, was captured in Karen Levine’s book that the world took into its heart.
The response since Hana’s Suitcase was published in the spring of 2002 has been overwhelming. Hana’s story has spread across the globe. It was on the bestseller list more than a year. It’s been translated into dozens of languages, honoured with numerous awards, adapted for the stage, and transformed into several films. The United Nations uses it in over 100 outposts, Archbishop Desmond Tutu wrote a foreword, and Michelle Obama was presented with a copy during an official visit to Prague. This new book includes the original story, plus:
• Commemorative letters from Karen, Fumiko, and George
• Reaction from readers around the world
• Letters and art from children
• Photographs of events and ceremonies
• Scenes from the play adaptation
• Posters from the staging of the play in over ten countries
• Awards and Tributes – lists, emblems, photos, and quotable quotes from juries and the media
• Covers from the international editions
• Images from the documentary film
and much more

Reviews
Listen to this interview with Karen Levine talking about Hana's Suitcase
"The 10th anniversary edition shows that Hana is teaching children, generations later and around the world, about justice and tolerance. The testimony from children about how they have been educated and moved to act in their own lives is an inspiration to keep teaching these positive values." - CM Magazine, June 8, 2012
"I think people my age should read this book because it’s wonderful to see how an empty suitcase can give you a lot of information. You also learn a lot in the book, and people my age haven’t learned much about the Holocaust." -Jocelyn Arrazola, special to The National Post, 04/19/2012
"Hana has a lesson to teach in every classroom, on every playground, in every school. Ten years later, we hope that it is still happening...It is a legacy never to be forgotten." -Sal's Fiction Addiction, 05/16/2012
"This anniversary edition will be welcomed by many of the readers of the original as well as a whole new generation of readers who are just old enough to delve into its pages. Highly recommended." -Resource Links, 08/2012
"As a parent of children who have been deeply moved by reading the original version of this work, I can immediately see its immense value for educators." -Canadian Teacher Magazine, 09/01/2012
