Congratulations to Second Story Press’ publisher and co-founder, Margie Wolfe, who has received her medal for the the Order of Canada from Governor General Mary Simon!
Margie’s appointment was originally announced on June 29, 2022. The Order of Canada has honoured Margie Wolfe for "her dedication as a leading publisher, feminist and social justice advocate in Canada’s literary industry who champions inclusive and diverse publications." Margie received her medal at a ceremony in Ottawa, ON, on May 2, 2024.
The announcement was covered by CBC Books, which you can read here.
Margie Wolfe has been publishing women-focused, social justice, and human rights books for adults and young people since 1977, first at Women’s Press and now at Second Story, which she co-founded in 1988. She is a well-known champion in Canada of telling the stories that others might not dare to tell. In 2020, Margie was awarded the President's Award from the Association of Canadian Publishers, which is awarded to ACP members who have made a significant contribution to the Canadian publishing industry and to the ACP. Former ACP President Melissa Pitts praised, "Margie's publishing vision over the past thirty plus years has been a force field for change." In 2017, Margie was recognized by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association for her part in "building a vibrant and inclusive society." The Canadian Children’s Book Centre held a fundraising dinner that same year with Margie as the guest of honour, celebrating her four decades of "passionate advocacy for social justice, women’s issues, Holocaust remembrance, as well as her inspiring contributions to Canadian children’s literature."
Margie is the author of a number of publications, including the award-nominated picture book The Promise, which she co-wrote with her cousin Pnina Bat Zvi to share the story of their mothers' imprisonment in the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust.
The entire team at Second Story Press wishes Margie Wolfe our heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved honour! We're thrilled her hard work and dedication continue to be recognized.
