Second Story Press is delighted to announce the winners of its latest Indigenous Writing Contest, conducted in partnership with Goodminds.com, a First Nation-owned business based on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. The jury has named one overall winner: Kurt Wilson, writing as Bear Meawasige, a member of Serpent River First Nation, for his highly compelling YA manuscript In the Long Shadows.
The press was thrilled with the number and quality of submissions and thanks every writer who participated. Out of many wonderful entries, two runners-up were also chosen: Jennifer Petahtegoose, Elk Clan from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, for her picture book A Ribbon Skirt for Hannah, and Vanessa Cake, a member of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, for her picture book Lyra’s Cedar Bath. The press would like to recognize the thoughtful work of the jury, made up of bestselling author Richard Van Camp, Sandra Samatte of GoodMinds.com, and Jordan Ryder, Managing Editor at Second Story Press.
Praise for the winning entries from juror Sandra Samatte at Goodminds.com:
In the Long Shadows by Bear Meawasige:
“This fantasy fiction, for a young adult audience, is beautifully descriptive, immersive, animated, and relational. This is a powerful story of hope and resilience.”
A Ribbon Skirt for Hannah by Jennifer Petahtegoose:
“Celebration is reflected in this colourfully engaging children’s picture book. Making a ribbon skirt gives Hannah time to pause, listen, think, ask questions, and be inspired by everyone and everything around her.”
Lyra’s Cedar Bath by Vanessa Cake:
“Grandma Cedar teaches Lyra about the Cedar Bath. From Smudging, to collecting Cedar, to passing along her wisdom makes this picture book an informative, healing, and comforting story.”
Thank you everyone, and we can't wait to see these books in print!!
